Nigerians especially men have been advised to go for HIV test to enable them know their status.
A medical expert and Chief Executive Officer, APIN Public Health Initiatives, Dr Prosper Okonkwo, who gave the advice in Abuja during the commemoration of this year’s World AIDS Day said that statistics have shown that more women have tested than men over the years.
He said that to encourage male uptake of HIV tests, testing during weekends and evening periods at strategic places shall be supported.
He said in the last five years, APIN Public Health Initiatives has carried out 4,475,318 individuals in the country with 70,655 persons enrolled on free HIV and AIDS treatment in three states of the federation, Lagos, Oyo and Plateau.
Dr Okonkwo said that 68% of people living with HIV in the country are not aware of their status for them to be placed on treatment, adding that 3.4 million individuals have been estimated to be living with HIV in Nigeria and the second highest burden in Africa.
The APIN Public Health Initiatives’ boss said only about 1.1 million (32%) of people living with HIV/AIDS in Nigeria know they are living with the virus while the remaining 68% which is about 2.3 million Nigerians do not know they are living with the disease.
He said: “While 970,000 people are on treatment, about 780,000 of them have attained viral suppression.”
According to him, this is a far cry from the UNAIDS 90.90.90 goal which outlined targets that must be achieved and interventions that must be front-loaded to close the chapter of AIDS epidemic globally by the year 2030.
